About FAST Curb-to-Curb Service

FAST is "Fast and Simple Transportation." It provides convenient, dependable curb-to-curb service using on-call mini-buses in areas not fully served by fixed route BREEZE buses. FAST operates in parts of Encinitas, Fallbrook, Ramona and south Vista. FAST is proposed to be discontinued effective August 10, 2008.

How it Works

FAST service picks up customers at their homes and delivers them to locations inside their FAST zone, to fixed route BREEZE stops or the nearest transit center. It is available to anyone at the same cost as BREEZE bus fares. FAST vans are wheelchair-lift equipped and have a rack for two bikes. NCTD contracts with Laidlaw Transit Services to operate the FAST vehicles.

FAST operates during regular BREEZE service hours in that zone. FAST does not operate on Sundays or holidays.

How to catch a FAST vehicle:

1. Scheduling a trip:
Call FAST at (800) 660-4789 to schedule your trip, an hour or more before you wish to leave but it's best to reserve your seat at least 24 hours in advance to ensure the trip you want. Please also tell the dispatcher when you want to arrive at your destination.

All trips booked are one-way with no stop-over or round trip. Multiple trips need to be booked in advance as separate trips.

The dispatcher will give you an estimated arrival time when the FAST van will pick you up. In Encinitas and Vista, we have both pick up and drop off within the hour the ride is scheduled. In Ramona and Fallbrook, passengers are picked up and dropped of within 15 minutes of the scheduled trip.

2. Board at the Transit Center or Station:
Once every hour, a FAST vehicle will be at the Encinitas Station and the Vista Transit Center to pick up any passenger who wishes to be dropped off at another location within that FAST Zone. No appointment is needed is board a FAST vehicle at these locations.

Passengers may board the FAST vehicle at the Encinitas Station 15 minutes past the hour.

Fallbrook FAST meets Route 306 to Vista and Route 397 to Camp Pendleton, each hour between 13 minutes after and 25 minutes after the hour on weekdays and 43 minutes past the hour on Saturdays. Passengers also may board each hour on Main Ave. and Ammunition Road.

Ramona FAST meets BREEZE Route 386 to Escondido at Ramona Station. It also meets MTS routes 891 and 892. To transfer to one of these MTS routes, request an Inter-Agency Transfer from your FAST driver. A cash upgrade will be required.

Passengers may board the FAST vehicle at the Vista Transit Center 30 minutes past the hour.

3. Subscription Service for Commuters:
Recurring pickups can be scheduled by calling FAST just once. Then every day that you subscribed to the service, a FAST vehicle will arrive to pick you up at the prearranged time and location and take you to your destination within the zone or to the nearest transit center!

Because FAST is a "shared-ride" service, other passengers may also be picked up and dropped off during your trip.

It's simple, safe and very convenient! And FAST costs the same as a trip on any other BREEZE bus route. If you need to transfer to another bus route to complete your trip, don't forget to ask the FAST shuttle driver for a free transfer slip when you board.
