About Your New Light Rail System

North County has a new east-west mobility link between Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido: the SPRINTER rail line. This investment in our community is significant; it's one of the largest public works projects this region has seen. The SPRINTER makes North County a nicer place to be, here's why:

The SPRINTER runs 22 miles along the Highway 78 corridor effortlessly transporting passengers to work, school, shopping centers and other activities.

Riders have the freedom to read, work or relax as these European-style light rail vehicles sprint to the 15 stations.

With significant population growth coming, we're all worried about congestion and the resulting pollution. The SPRINTER will reduce traffic by eliminating hundreds of cars and will offer North County residents a green alternative.

The predictable, reliable service is easy to use, practical and consumer friendly. It's easy to reach North County's top destinations using the BREEZE bus system, which serves all fifteen stations. Additionally, the COASTER trains connect with the SPRINTER in Oceanside.

The SPRINTER also encourages transit-oriented development in the cities along the route, a prospect that supports the principles of Smart Growth.

Service Features

The SPRINTER is a sleek, quiet and efficient transportation system. These trains are smaller and much quieter than the COASTER. Visit our fact sheets page to learn more about the SPRINTER vehicles.

It features short, convenient trips to 15 stations; average 3-5 minutes between stations.

The 22-mile long SPRINTER rail line is 53 minutes travel time from end to end.

College students and staff take note: the SPRINTER offers service to MiraCosta College (easy 10 minute connection by BREEZE bus), Palomar College and Cal State University San Marcos.

Passenger service runs seven days a week; weekday service every 30 minutes in each direction, from approximately 4 am to 9 pm. Weekend trains operate every hour in both directions.

The SPRINTER runs 64 trips daily (weekdays).

Trains are comfortable and bright inside with maximum capacity of 226 passengers. Two trains can be linked together to offer a capacity of more than 450 passengers, as is being done for weekend service.

The SPRINTER trains travel at a maximum speed of 55 mph.

Many fun destinations and places of interest are accessible from the SPRINTER line.

Bikes, wheelchairs, scooters, strollers, boogieboards and surfboards (6' or under in length) are welcome on the SPRINTER.

The SPRINTER offers easy connections to the COASTER, BREEZE, Amtrak, Metrolink, Greyhound and a future Bus Rapid Transit project planned in Escondido.

The SPRINTER features an affordable flat fare, same as the BREEZE fares. Day passes and monthly passes can be used interchangeably on the BREEZE and SPRINTER. COASTER ticket holders/monthly pass holders and Metrolink monthly pass holders may ride the SPRINTER for no additional charge.
