NCTD Honored by American Public Transportation Association for Outstanding Safety Culture and Innovation

For the first time in agency history, NCTD has been awarded the Bus Safety Excellence Gold Award by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). The Gold Award recognizes transit agencies that have designed and implemented proactive, highly effective programs to reduce preventable accidents, improve driver training and enhance the safety of both passengers and transit workers.

The association recognized NCTD for the implementation of its QR-Code Hazard Reporting Program, which represents a shift from a reporting tool to an integrated safety system that drives participation, accountability and action.

Transit agencies commonly face challenges related to underreporting of hazards, limited frontline engagement and communication gaps between employees and leadership. NCTD’s program addresses these challenges by combining accessible reporting tools with structured workflows, executive oversight and accountability mechanisms.

“Every mile we operate carries responsibility. At North County Transit – San Diego Railroad, employees speak up, hazards are addressed and trust is earned. Safety is our commitment every day, on every route,” said Chief Executive Officer, Shawn M. Donaghy.
