LOSSAN Signal Modernization
blue box

NCTD has developed a phased program of projects, the subject of this funding request will improve on-time performance by reducing delays attributable to signal and grade crossing systems failures.

The objective of this Project is to replace a large portion of the legacy/obsolete equipment and related signal houses, cabling, and signals to bring the system into a good State of Good Repair by utilizing state-of-the-art modern components.

Project Details

This replacement of legacy components will allow NCTD to build an adequate spare parts inventory of legacy components ensuring that train operations can continue uninterrupted through routine maintenance activities.

Funded Cost: $20.9 million

Replacement of the legacy/obsolete equipment and related signal houses, cabling, and signals

  • Improves system reliability, on-time performance and grade crossing safety
  • Reduce negative effectives on Positive Train Control (PTC)

Increase ridership by creating a more reliable network for intercity, commuter and freight rail services

  • Freight benefits: reduces freight train delays and associated operating costs caused by signaling issues.
  • Intercity and Commuter Rail Benefits: improves intercity and commuter passenger train on-time performance, speed, and reliability by reducing cascading impacts of delayed Amtrak, Metrolink, and COASTER trains.
  • Multimodal Transportation System Improvements: improves signaling and positive train control reliability to better coordinate rail crossing gate activations and reduce delay/impacts to automobile travel.
