Public transit is an energy-efficient way to travel reducing the number of cars on the road and helping to improve air quality by reducing smog.

Plus, alternatives to driving directly from your home, such as walking and cycling to and from public transit stops, promote physical activity and improve overall health.

Make a Difference

Ride transit:

North County Transit – San Diego Railroad (NCTD) offers services such as the COASTER commuter rail, SPRINTER hybrid rail, BREEZE fixed-route bus, FLEX on-demand service, and LIFT paratransit. Every trip you take on public transit helps reduce your carbon footprint.

NCTD has taken even greater strides to help our planet by adding new elements to our fleet, including:

  • Siemens charger locomotives to improve overall COASTER efficiency and sustainability, providing an estimated 90% reduction in emissions
  • Zero emission buses with both hydrogen and battery electric technology
  • Every journey counts!

Volunteer at local clean-up events:

Ride COASTER (to Santa Fe) April 26 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Seaport Village, sign up at volunteer.surfrider.org/timeslots/lHteYmCcLt. The Surfrider Foundation hosts public beach and park cleanups regularly county wide. Check out their page for more upcoming dates and times.

Take a hike, enjoy our planet:

  • Ride BREEZE (to Mission Av & Foussat Rd) to San Luis Rey River Trail.
  • Ride BREEZE (to Carlsbad Bl & Tamarack Av) to Agua Hedionda Lagoon Garfield Street Trailhead.
  • Ride BREEZE (to Oceanside Blvd & El Camino Real E) Garrison Creek Nature Trail (Town Center Entrance).

Reduce, reuse, and recycle:

A cornerstone slogan to promote environmental responsibility by minimizing waste, finding new uses for materials, and transforming discarded items into valuable resources.

Conserve water:

Focus on fixing leaks, taking shorter showers, turning off the tap while brushing teeth, and using water-efficient appliances and landscaping techniques.

Learn more by attending local Earth Day events:

Ride BREEZE (to N Santa Fe Av & Mesa Dr.) to the Stay Classy O’side Community Event at Alamosa Park on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. This event features family-friendly fun with educational booths, activities for kids, music, games, and more.
