Oceanside, CA – In honor of the public transit workers that have continued to move essential employees to their vital jobs throughout this pandemic, the North County Transit District (NCTD) and San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) will participate in the nationwide “Sound the Horn” campaign on Thursday, April 16 at 12 p.m. by blowing their horns in unison.
NCTD and MTS join New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and many other regional bus and train operators as they participate in #SoundTheHorn – a coordinated tribute to the essential workers on the front lines of this public health crisis, including transportation workers. The tribute will consist of two one-second horn blasts to show solidarity with all those continuing to perform essential functions throughout this crisis.
“We are so thankful to our many frontline employees for their dedication and spirit,” said NCTD Board Chair and Encinitas Councilmember Tony Kranz. “Their work on the buses and trains continues to keep San Diego moving. Public transit is a vital service, now more than ever, and we thank all employees for their commitment. They are truly the heroes of public transit.”
“It is highly appropriate that transit operators around the nation are sounding their horns,” said Nathan Fletcher, San Diego County Supervisor, and MTS Chair. “The folks who operate, drive, and work on transit are unsung heroes every day. But in light of this health crisis and the fact that they are providing an absolutely essential service makes this acknowledgment even more meaningful. This is a small but powerful way to applaud the excellent work our transit operators are providing during this critical time.”
Heroic transportation workers continue to provide critical service for healthcare workers, first responders, childcare workers, grocery store employees, and other heroes who are performing critically essential work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Anyone who sees or hears trains, buses, or trolleys sounding their horns at 12 p.m. on Thursday is encouraged to use the #SoundTheHorn hashtag to post audio and video, and tag either NCTD or MTS on social media.
