2025 Roadeo

To enter the competition,

The top bus operator, and top maintenance team will have the opportunity to represent NCTD at the regional roadeo event in Southern California in March 2025 as well as at the International Bus Roadeo hosted by the American Public Transportation Association taking place in Austin, TX April 2025.

What is the Bus Roadeo?
Bus Operators are required to complete a pre-trip inspection to find planted mechanical and security defects on a bus, complete a uniform inspection, conduct an ADA boarding/ securement assessment, and must drive a bus through a course containing 11 obstacles while under a strict time limit. Each skill has various points available. The winners will be based on the operators with the highest skill course score as well as the lowest time to complete the course.

Bus Maintenance teams usually consist of three employees, but can be as little as two employees. In the Maintenance Bus Technicians’ roadeo, Technicians must diagnose, and repair various mechanical issues planted on buses. There is also a written ASE test with questions on topics such as HVAC, Transmission, and brakes.

 

Contestant Eligibility Requirements:
Contestants must:
1. Be employees of an APTA member transit system in good standing or represent a Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) member organization in good standing with APTA
2. Have worked, full-time or part-time, in the field in which they are competing (Bus Operator or Maintenance Bus Technician) for not less than 1 year prior to the date of the Roadeo and must have a job description that matches the position for which they are applying
3. Meet their local transit system’s guidelines on sickness and absenteeism
4. Process a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

2. Ineligibility
Any of the following conditions during the span of 1 year prior to the Roadeo competition date will make an employee ineligible to compete:
1. More than 0 Safety Points
2. More than 4 attendance points
3. Compensation for and/or functioning as a BTW or Classroom instructor/trainer for 60 days or more in the
previous year
