Help the Planet, Take Transit

Oceanside, CA – This Earth Day, take transit to reduce your carbon footprint.

Hop on board North County Transit – San Diego Railroad’s (NCTD) many service options including COASTER commuter rail from Oceanside to downtown San Diego, SPRINTER hybrid rail from Oceanside to Escondido, BREEZE fixed-route bus (with FLEX service), LIFT paratransit, and NCTD+ On-Demand in San Marcos.

In 2001, NCTD introduced its first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to the fleet. CNG represented a drastic reduction in smog-producing emissions and helped improve air quality. NCTD has recently introduced six battery electric buses (BEB) and 19 hydrogen fuel cell buses (FCEB) to its fleet. When delivery is completed this June, NCTD is slated to have a total of 35 FCEBs.

Additional enhancements include new Siemens Charger locomotives for COASTER that provide a 90% reduction in emissions. These diesel-electric charger locomotives help usher in the next generation of clean, reliable, and efficient rail service in California. The new Chargers began service in 2021 and have added 36 more trips to the weekly schedule.

Public transportation can also promote physical activity and improve overall health as many people walk or cycle to and from transit stops. Bikes and scooters are allowed on COASTER, SPRINTER, BREEZE, and FLEX (see GoNCTD.com/Policies).

Do your part this Earth Day, and every day, by choosing the green track – every journey counts. For more information on how to make a change this Earth Day, visit GoNCTD.com/NCTDBlog.
