Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can I apply for a job at NCTD before the “official” transition date of July 1, 2025?

Yes, applications and job listings will be posted here on this page. Individuals who have registered for updates will be notified, and communication will also be shared throughout the facility to raise awareness of the positions being added.
Some positions with safety-sensitive requirements may have specific timing criteria, so these roles can be anticipated 60-90 days before the transition date. All other roles, including leadership positions, will be posted here as they become available.
We encourage everyone to apply for the NCTD equivalent of their current position. If you are interested in other roles, you are welcome to apply for those as well. However, we kindly ask that you refrain from submitting mass applications.

2. What happens if I miss the application deadline?

If you miss an application deadline, we ask that you contact us bustransition@nctd.org immediately to let us know. We understand that extenuating circumstances may occur and appreciate knowing this as soon as possible.

3. As a current MV employee am I guaranteed a job with NCTD?

NCTD intends to provide a hiring preference to existing MV employees for positions available during the transition of the service contract from MV to NCTD. However, employment is not guaranteed, as all applicants must meet NCTD’s hiring qualifications and requirements. Reasons why MV employees may not be hired by NCTD include:
1. Failure of any controlled substances or alcohol test, physical examination, or criminal background check required by law as a condition of employment.
2. Failure to meet the reference checks for the position, such as possessing the licenses required by law to operate equipment that the employee will operate as part of NCTD.

4. Why am I required to complete an application?

The completion and submission of an application is required to allow NCTD to efficiently conduct its interview and hiring process while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements. These requirements include background checks, drug and alcohol testing, physical examinations, and other necessary evaluations. Additionally, this process helps NCTD determine the actual number of current contractor employees transitioning to direct employment and facilitates setting up employees in NCTD’s payroll and administrative systems.

5. If I was in CalPERS in the past, how will joining NCTD affect my pension?

We recommend that anyone who has prior CalPERS participation, contact CalPERS directly at 888-225-7377 to discuss your specific situation.

6. If I retired from CalPERS, what happens to my CalPERS pension?

We recommend that anyone who has prior CalPERS participation, contact CalPERS directly at 888-225-7377 to discuss your specific situation.

7. What happens to any vacation that I schedule (or want to schedule) after July 1, 2025?

For all represented employees, this would be subject to the collective bargaining agreement, which is currently being negotiated. For non-represented employees, PTO accrues per the employee handbook and can be taken when PTO is accrued.

8. When will my health insurance be effective with NCTD.

Benefits will begin on the first day of the month following your hire date, provided all required paperwork is submitted promptly. Since positions will be filled at different times, the start of your benefits will depend on both your hire date and the timely submission of your onboarding documentation.
